Tomodachi Collection, literally "Friend Collection", is a DS extension of the Miis that are used on the Wii. Small avatars that can be shaped to look like anyone. The idea is that in this game the friends can be taken anywhere and will interact with each other.
It's Nintendogs with people.
So the friends (Miis) are created the same way as on the Wii, but with a few added extras. Each is given a voice and personality. Both are done the same way, basically, but adjusting sliding selectors according to what is wanted. Pitch, tone, etc., for the voice and between 'Laid Back' and 'Energetic' or similar for the personality. Yes, finally the realisation of the dream of creating a generic Japanese shop girl is possible – give her the highest voice possible and make her run everywhere. Then give them food if they're hungry, introduce them to each other, buy them clothes and interiors for their apartments. The more friends you have, the more shops will be unlocked on the island. That's about it.
Creepiness aside, in the hands of most players this will probably have the longevity of Nintendogs and will then either get sold or given away. The game is not designed to be deep and involving, it's more of a quick five minute play here or there. If the player is the kind of person who gets carried away with the collecting side of games then they may spend more time with it, giving every friend every outfit or interior available.
There are some nice touches, like being able to make a friend sing a song and changing the words, or watching their dreams as they sleep. The game is in real time, so they will do different things as the day goes on. In the end, though, there are only so many characters that can be made and playing the game then just becomes a case of doing the rounds. Same thing, day after day, but lacking the variety of something like Animal Crossing. |
