Damien McFerran
I’m a gamer firmly of the opinion that games ‘ain’t as good as they used to be’. Rose-tinted specs all the way, I tend to gravitate more towards the classic 16-bit consoles than the current crop of modern machines. My obsession with retro formats often results in me selling modern games to pay for old ones – this may seem like a clear indication of madness to many, but any other ‘retro’ gamer will agree that there’s a real buzz in searching out classic titles.

I started out on home computers such as the Atari 800 and ST, moving onto consoles with the release of the Megadrive. Since that day I’ve always favoured consoles over home computers. I remain something of a Sega ‘fanboy’, despite throwing my lot in with rival companies such as Nintendo, SNK and Sony along the way. My main obsession is still the Megadrive. Those boxes just so look damn good when they’re stacked up on a shelf.

In recent years I’ve found that ‘real life’ has encroached on my gaming time to an unacceptable degree, and I have less and less time to spend with a joypad in my sweaty palms. But then this time comes to us all, which makes those retro memories all the more dear.
